How to manage working at home and family.

Working at Home is a Real Job!

Working at home can be very rewarding. However, it is important to know that working at home comes both pros and cons.

For example; when you are first starting out you might have a family member or friend who does not understand that you are working at a “real job” even if it is from your home.

There are many cases where friends or family members will think you are not really working and expect you to be available at all times to run errands, take calls, etc.

While working at home does give you the freedom to set your own schedule you must also set guidelines for when you are working so that others will learn to respect your work time.

You can do this by letting others know what the work schedule is for the week.  Remind them that just because you are working from your home office does not mean you can be interrupted every 5 minutes.

Set your voice mail to accept calls that way you can check them, and if it is important you can always call them back or monitor your caller id.

If you have one phone line and still use dial up, then check out an online caller id.  Some ISPs like AOL have a caller id system that shows you a call is coming in and who it is to allow you to decide to disconnect and answer or let go to voice mail.

Once you set the guidelines, and your family / friends see that you are serious about working from your home, they will come around to respect your work time.  It might take a little while for some people; yet, it will happen.  It just takes time for some to see that working at home is actually like working a real job.

You will always have a handful of people that think unless you go to an office from 9 to 5 it is not a real job.  For those types of people, you will just have to learn to understand that was how they were brought up, and that it might take them longer to see that your career is real and that you are serious about working at home.

Keep schedules and be sure to schedule time in for yourself and your family.  It can become very easy to become a workaholic at home!  Time can slip away when in front of a computer so be sure to set time aside for those important in your life and for yourself.

If you are working at home as a medical transcriptionist, then it is very important that you are able to keep to your work schedule.  If you plan on transcribing the medical reports between 8 AM to 2PM or even 4 PM  to 10 PM, then make sure you stick to your schedule.

It is very easy to get caught up in other things and forget about the hours you were supposed to be working!  You have to treat your work –at-home job just as you would if you were working in an office!

The medical transcription company or doctor whom you are working for will expect to have the transcribed reports back within the time frame they allowed.

Regardless of what career you are working from home in you will want to reach out to others that also work at home.  When the family doesn’t understand that the work you do at home is really work, and they are giving you a hard time, it is nice to have others that understand to reach out to. There are many work-at-home community websites online.
